What is a GIF?
Is it pronounced like “gift” or like “Jiffy” … either way, what is a GIF? A GIF stands for graphics interchange format, but basically it’s just a web graphic that moves. For example, you may have seen an icon that moves or a banner that waves or maybe even just text that increases or decreases in size. The image presented at the top of this web page is a GIF, too. Notice how it repeats a certain set of criteria in a specified order. An animated GIF can present one or even a few sequences and then stop animation, or it can loop endlessly on the web page – it just depends on how the designer created the animated graphic.
Social Media Marketing
It wasn’t that long ago that GIFs were looked upon poorly from the internet crowd. However, the times have changed and it is extremely common to incorporate GIFs into your social media marketing strategy. They are extremely eye-catching and easy to share across your social media networks. Not to mention that attention spans are short these days, due to social media and internet providing instant access to world events, news, opinions, etc. Because a GIF is very easy to follow, businesses often use them as education tools, providing step-by-step guides or product demos.
It’s also extremely common to use GIFs to communicate as well, especially in response to someone or something. For example, Facebook messenger provides a small library of GIFs that users can send to whomever they are writing back and forth with. These GIFs vary in type, from movie, tv and celebrity clips to moving vector art. Many companies are also using GIFs to create an emotional response from customers or potential leads — typically in the form of humor. GIFs are also popular for business use in email marketing, especially in regards to header or body images. These moving images are used to capture the brief attention span of the shopper.
