What is a Like?
Many business owners dabbling in digital marketing ask the same question, “what is a Like?” and does it affect my business? A “Like” is an action made by a social media user to indicate approval of a message. Specifically on Facebook, a “Like” is denoted by a “thumbs up” symbol and until recently, the “Like” button was the only way a user could show recognition or approval of a message. The Like action became synonymous with someone virtually saying “I acknowledge this,” whether they were showing approval, disapproval, etc. However, with the addition of Facebook reactions, followers and friends are now able to provide a “Like,” “Love,” “Haha,” “Wow,” “Sad,” and “Angry.”
The majority of social media networks have a “Like” button, but different slightly between networks. For instance, Facebook and LinkedIn both use the “Like” button as text with a hyperlink, but Pinterest, Twitter, and Instagram all use a heart icon to indicate the “Like” as a button, while Google+ utilizes a +1 button.
If you’re a business owner, then you need an active social media marketing presence, including business pages and profiles on the leading networks, like Facebook, Pinterest, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Tumblr, and Google+. But, the question was: How does a “Like” affect my business. As it goes with all social networks, a behind-the-scenes algorithm is doing all the work to determine which of your followers sees yours posts – whether you’re using Facebook for business or personal. For business purposes, let’s just focus on Facebook marketing. A “Like” is part of an overall string of events that occur to basically find out the popularity of your business on the particular social network. Every action on Facebook — Like, Comment, Share, etc. — combines behind the scenes in a mathematical equation to determine what a follower sees on their news feed of recent activity. In simple terms, the more a person will Like, comment, or share on a particular status, image, video, ad or link, the more often they will see posts from that company or person. But, in reality … it’s not that simple. An algorithm, especially on Facebook, is so much more complicated than that.
