What is Google+?
This is one of the more popular questions we receive: what is Google+? In June of 2011, Google rolled out it’s own social networking site, Google+. At the time, it was a comparable service to Facebook, however lack of growth and popularity has caused Google+ to go back to the drawing board to change a few things with their social media service.
In April 2014, the Google+ Executive departed the project and company; and by March 2015 a new executive had replaced the former—and not just any executive, the original co-founder of Google+, Bradley Horowitz. Horowitz is now the Vice President of streams, photos, and sharing and at the time, hinted at a “huge shift” coming for the rocky social network. According to their Wiki page, Google+ is now an interest-based social network, which focuses on their Collections and Communities functionality.
With a Google+ account, users have a home stream. Similar to Facebook and Instagram’s News Feed and Pinterest’s Smart Feed, Google+ users can fill their home stream with the recent activity of those collections they follow or communities that they have joined. Additionally, users may notice recommended content; this is popular content that Google+ determines users might like to see in their home feed.
Collections seem to work similarly to Pinterest, allowing posts and interests to be viewed by others. For instance, Google+ users may save recipes, articles, or interests as well as personal photos for specific audiences to view. While Collections are interest-based, Communities are user-based. Google+ users simply need to join communities with fellow users that share similar interests or users may create their own.
Google+ for Business
It’s a little known fact that Google+ is actually highly relevant in terms of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). Those looking to increase their SEO need to create an active and consistent Google+ account and share their regular blog and website updates. High search engine rankings are essential to marketing success, and social media marketing (with Google+ included) is key to that success. The quicker you set up a Google+ profile, the earlier Google can begin indexing your business and your pages.
