What is Twitter?
What is Twitter and how should I use it for business purposes? Commonly referred to as a microblogging service, Twitter is a popular (and free) social media network that allows registered users to compose 140 character messages called tweets. Users can publish tweets as well as adding images, videos and links—which as of recently, do not count towards their 140 character limit. Similar to other networks, users can follow other accounts, browse a news feed of recent activity and search for topics by the use of hashtags.
But, why have a 140 character limit? Twitter’s roots go back to 2006 when text messages were limited to 160 characters. Twitter founders determined that 140 character tweets combined with room for a 20 character username within each tweet would allow for compatibility with SMS character limitations. Through the years, Twitter has continued it’s steady growth and as of the second quarter of 2016, Twitter had amassed 313 million active monthly users (and growing everyday).
Twitter for Business
While there is no differentiating factor between a personal Twitter account and a business account, there are numerous benefits when using Twitter for business purposes. In fact, from a 2014 study, 47 percent of users who followed a brand on Twitter were more likely to visit their website than other social networks. In 2015, it was found that 65 percent of U.S. companies use Twitter for marketing purposes. These numbers speak volumes for any business, brand or individual looking to build their social media following—especially those who can spend adequate amounts of time on Twitter for business purposes.
